You’ve been talking to people all day and not one of them has noticed that you’re currently using Invisalign. One of the best parts about it is that you can go about your life normally without distracting and uncomfortable orthodontic work in your mouth. You know eventually you’ll just show up with a straighter smile and everyone will be wondering why you look so confident. Now it’s the end of the day and it’s time to clean your teeth, as well as your aligners. What is the best way to clean them? Dr. Hazim Sadeddin from Westover Dentistry has 5 tips to keep your Invisalign clear aligners spotless.
Rinse Your Aligners
Whenever you take your aligners out, be sure to rinse them with warm water. Saliva and plaque can easily gather in them, which can create the ideal environment for bacteria to breed.
Soak Your Aligners
Be sure to soak your aligners at least an hour a day in a solution like Denture Cleaner, Retainer Brite, or the Invisalign cleaning crystals to sanitize them. Avoid just leaving them out, as this can expose them to more bacteria, or even cause you to misplace them.
Brush Your Teeth
Make sure to brush and floss before you put your aligners in. The plaque on your teeth can become trapped by the aligners and make it much easier to cause tooth decay or bad breath.
Brush Your Aligners
Just like your teeth, plaque and bacteria can build up on your aligners, and it needs to be brushed off. Be sure to brush gently so you do not scratch your aligners. You may even want to invest in a soft bristled brush. Use a clear anti-bacterial soap, as colored soaps can actually stain your aligners. Regular toothpaste (especially those with whitening properties) can be very abrasive and scratch your aligners. These scratches can create areas for plaque and bacteria to gather.
Try to only drink water while you are wearing Invisalign. Many other foods and drinks can stain and discolor your aligners, or become trapped within them. The closed-off, damp environment is perfect for bacteria, which can lead to tooth decay and bad breath.
