Emergency Dentist in Arlington, VA Prepares You for Trips

Have you prepared for your trip out of town by meeting with your emergency dentist in Arlington, VA first? When you’re planning to enjoy a vacation, the last thing you want to worry about is a dental emergency. One minute you and your children are enjoying fun in the sun, the next you’ve got a chipped tooth and crying children on your hands. What can you do so far away from your normal dental office? What should you do to save your kid’s smile?

At Westover Dentistry, we know that there are some things you can do to prepare yourself for dental emergencies. Here are some suggestions on what you should do if you’re planning on being far from your emergency dentist in Arlington, VA.

Visit Your Regular Dentist First

The best thing to do is schedule an appointment with your dentist in Arlington, VA before you leave for vacation.  It’s best to make sure that you don’t have any dental health issues before you leave. If you’ve been experiencing any pain or abnormalities, this is the time to discuss them. They can be warning signs of gum disease or a very weak tooth. While gum disease shouldn’t set in suddenly while you’re on vacation, a weak teeth could crack or fall out so it’s important that they identify and treat it before you leave.

Get A Referral

While visiting your dentist, ask them if they can recommend any dentists in the area you’re going to. Even if we can’t think of anyone off the top of our heads, we have the resources you need to find an office that should be able to help you in your time of need. Ask them for someone who’s willing to do emergency dental visits, who could fit you in on very short notice if need be.

Finish Your Root Canal Treatment Before Leaving

This is a specific tip, but it’s important nonetheless. If you’re having root canal work done, make sure it’s complete before going on vacation. The pressure changes that happen during a flight could agitate your recovering teeth. Tooth pain is a quick way to ruin a planned trip!

React Quickly and Appropriately

If you crack or chip your teeth, you should immediately rinse your mouth out with water and then apply a cold compress to the area. Keep the compress in place to control your swelling and then seek you’re your referred emergency dentist or hospital immediately.

If you lose a tooth, hold the dislodged tooth by the crown and rinse off the tooth’s root in water. Do NOT scrub the tooth or remove any tissue fragments that may still be attached. If you can hold the tooth back in its socket, do so as you get yourself to your referred emergency dentist.  If you can’t do that, put the tooth in a cup of milk to keep the tooth strong and moist. Get to your emergency dentist quickly! You have much higher chances of saving your natural tooth if you’re able to get to your dentist within an hour of it falling out. The longer you put it off, the greater the chances that the tooth won’t survive.
