Dr. Hazim Sadeddin Reminds You to Use Your Insurance Benefits!

dental insurance clipboardNext year will be here before you know it! In just a few short weeks, you’ll hang your new calendar on the wall, start fretting about filing taxes, and get your New Year’s Resolutions off to a strong start. But there are still a few things you should put on your to-do list before this year bows out of the picture, and one of those things involves taking advantage of your dental benefits. Why is this so important? Your dentist in Arlington VA is here to discuss this timely topic.

Benefits Expire on December 31

If you have a typical insurance plan, it operates on a calendar year basis. Therefore, your benefits will expire on December 31. You may keep your plan into the new year, but some of its fine print could change. You may end up with a higher premium, a higher deductible, or a different copay. Why risk spending more money? It’s best to get needed dental work done now.

Another advantage you reap when you use your dental benefits this year is that you might have already met your deductible. Therefore, you could take care of your smile for little money or perhaps even no money at all. Next year, you’ll have to start fresh with your deductible.

What Should I Use My Insurance For?

Your teeth and gums feel healthy, do they? That’s fantastic, but that doesn’t mean you have permission to stay away from your Arlington dentist. Most insurance policies are all about encouraging you to take advantage of preventive care. In fact, they often divide dental services into three classes, and they cover a different portion of the cost for procedures in each class. They cover the highest percentage of preventive care. It only makes sense for you to take advantage of that and make sure you visit your dentist at least twice a year for a cleaning and checkup.

What if you need other work done? The two other classes that insurance companies use to label dental care include:

  • Basic procedures. This usually includes things like fillings, extractions, and root canals (although some companies may say that root canals belong in the “Major” class of dental work). Most policies cover 70 to 80 percent of the cost of these treatments.
  • Major procedures. Bridges, dentures, and surgery usually receive the “major” level. Your company might cover about 50 percent of the cost of these procedures. Even if your benefits only cover half the cost of needed work, you still get significant savings. Plus, insurance companies often negotiate lower rates for the clients, putting even more money back in your pocket.

As you think ahead into the future, don’t forget about the rest of this year. Using your dental benefits before they expire will make your mouth and your budget happy.
