What to Expect at Veneers Appointment

Dentists use dental veneers to improve the way a patient’s teeth look. Dental veneers are designed to enhance or change the appearance of stained, broken, chipped or undesired teeth. If you are considering them for a new smile, you should be prepared for the procedure. Here is what to expect.

What is involved in getting dental veneers?

A patient may need up to three dental appointments for the entire process. The first will be for diagnosis and treatment planning, the second for preparation and the third for bonding. A single tooth or multiple teeth can undergo the procedure at the same time. Each appointment is important.

Diagnosis and treatment planning

This first step involves the active participation of a patient. A patient should explain the desired results to the dentist. During this phase, the dentist will examine the teeth to make sure the veneers are appropriate and explain what the procedure involves and its limitations. The dentist may also take X-rays and make impressions of the teeth and mouth.

Preparation

During the second appointment, the dentist will remove some tooth enamel to make room for the veneers. Before trimming off the enamel, a local anesthetic can be used if needed. Then the dentist will take an impression or mold of the teeth to send to the dental laboratory so that proper veneers can be made. The dentist can decide to place temporary veneers.

Bonding

On the third and final visit, after the veneers are ready, the dentist will inspect them for any obvious problems. Each veneer will be placed temporarily on the teeth without any cement and the dentist will examine the fit and color of the veneers. The dentist will trim them repeatedly until they fit properly. At this point, the dentist can still adjust the color.

The next step involves preparing the teeth before the veneers are placed. The dentist will clean the teeth and then roughen them to allow for a strong bonding process. The cement will help attach the veneer to the tooth. The dentist may use a special light to harden it quickly and will remove any excess cement from the teeth. If a patient is not biting correctly onto the veneers, the dentist may make small reductions of the opposing teeth. Other final necessary adjustments may also be made in the veneers.

The dentist may schedule a follow-up visit in a couple of weeks after getting them to make sure the veneers are properly placed. Dentists usually provide care instructions for veneers. It may take some time for patients to adjust and get used to them and the care process. Dentists usually recommend regular cleanings and dental checkups. Most veneers last for several years before they have to be replaced.

Your new smile

After going through the procedure, veneers can give you the smile you have always wanted. The process is actually simple. It is good to know what to expect at all the three appointments. If you have decided to get veneers, consult with your dentist and make sure you fully understand every part of the process.
