Trusted Sedation Dentist in Arlington
Do you routinely put off or avoid important dental care because of your fear or anxiety? The team at Westover Dentistry has a great solution — three of them, actually — for helping patients just like you overcome dental phobias and other barriers to regular dental care. With our comprehensive sedation dentistry options, you can set aside anxious feelings to get the help you need at long last. The sedation dentist in Arlington has you covered with relaxing care!
Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Better known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a method of sedation that creates feelings of relaxation within minutes of being breathed in through a small mask that fits comfortably over your nose. Nitrous oxide is a wonderful solution for anyone with mild to moderate anxiety undergoing basic procedures. One significant benefit of laughing gas is that it wears off as quickly as it takes effect, so you can return to your normal activities immediately following treatment.
Oral Conscious Sedation
For patients with more significant dental fear or anxiety, or for anyone undergoing a longer or more complex procedure, oral conscious sedation provides a deeper level of relaxation.
To achieve oral conscious sedation, your dentist will prescribe a pill for you to take orally about an hour before your procedure. The medication’s relaxing effects will have taken over by the time you are settling into the dental chair. We will also administer local anesthesia to remove feeling from the treatment area. You are still awake while under this type of sedation, just completely removed from the sensations of what’s going on around you.
Plan for someone to drive you to and from an appointment in which you will undergo oral conscious sedation, as its effects take over before you reach our office and may last for a few hours after. You should avoid strenuous activity for the rest of the day, but you will be back to your regular routine after 24 hours.
Intravenous sedation is delivered straight into the bloodstream with an IV inserted into the back of the hand or the crook of the elbow. Because of the precise control that’s possible with this form of sedation, it is a great option for patients with mild, moderate, or severe anxiety. You remain conscious and able to respond to your doctor’s questions while under IV sedation, but you will be so relaxed you may doze off throughout the procedure.
The effects of IV sedation take time to wear off. If you are undergoing a procedure with this option, plan to have someone drive you home from the dentist’s office. It’s a good idea to have someone check on you for the hours following the procedure. You’ll be free to return to your normal activities by the next day.
