A dental crown is a restorative treatment that fits over the top of a tooth. You can think of a crown as a little tooth-shaped “cap.”
It protects your tooth from additional damage while restoring your ability to talk and chew with ease. At Westover Dentistry in Arlington, VA we take special care to customize each individual crown so it seamlessly blends in with your surrounding teeth. Your tooth crown will resemble your natural teeth so perfectly that onlookers shouldn’t be able to tell your crown isn’t your “real” tooth!
A tooth crown procedure usually requires two appointments in our Arlington, VA office. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom tooth crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new dental crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory. While your tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare your tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the dental crown. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary tooth crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly. At your second appointment in our Arlington, VA office, your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new tooth crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite are accurate.

How We Can Alleviate Your TMJ Pain:
Mouth guards are an essential protective appliance for those with Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMJ/TMD). These specially designed guards not only protect teeth from impact injuries but also provide crucial cushioning to reduce trauma to the mouth, teeth, and jaw - areas particularly sensitive in TMJ/TMD patients.
For patients who experience bruxism, or teeth grinding, our team at Lowes Island Dentistry in Sterling, VA encourages you to be fitted for a night guard. Night guards, or bite guards, help to protect your teeth from crushing and grinding of teeth by providing a protective layer between your teeth.
